“I have not the honor to be personally acquainted with you; but, in despite of your silence on the subject of slavery, and your advocacy of the Colonization Society, I have for many years entertained an exalted opinion of your character as a philanthropist and a christian.” Then Garrison goes on to tell Smith that he has, unwittingly, “done immense injury to the colored population” by his support of colonization.
